FAMILY, friends and council colleagues of former Stourport Mayor George Smart will gather for a memorial service next week to celebrate his life.

George, who served on the town and county councils, passed away peacefully at home on December 3, aged 94.

He was first elected to Stourport Town Council in 1979, having already served on Worcestershire County Council.

For 15 years, George served as vice chair and later chair of the Twinning Committee, and also offered his time to Stourport's Sports Association, the Grants Working Party and the Memorial Park Sub-Committee.

He continued to serve his community as mayor in 1985 and 1986.

George was described as a 'loving father, grandfather and great grandfather' who will be greatly missed.

Following a cremation service on December 18, a memorial event will be held at St Michael's Church in Church Avenue on Monday, January 28 in George's honour.
