THE chief executive of Birmingham 2022 recently paid a visit Redditch.

Ian Reid recently met with Redditch MP Rachel Maclean and others at the Abbey Stadium for to discuss what, if anything, Redditch could gain from the games coming to Birmingham.

A number of ideas were discussed at the meeting, including the potential for Redditch to be a training base for a Commonwealth team, as well as the potential for the Queen’s Baton Relay to pass through Redditch.

It was also made clear at the meeting that there will also be opportunities for Redditch businesses to bid for contracts and employment opportunities for local residents.

Speaking following the meeting, Rachel said: “Ever since it was announced Birmingham will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, I’ve been campaigning to ensure Redditch benefits as much as possible from the games.

“It was great to bring Ian to Redditch to discuss what our town has to offer.

"It was a productive meeting and I know Ian was delighted by our town’s enthusiasm to be part of this global sporting event, especially after hearing the feedback from my constituents.

“This is just the beginning of the conversation with the organising committee. Work will be continuing behind the scenes, so watch this space.”

The leader of Redditch Borough Council, Councillor Matt Dormer, the chief executive of Redditch Borough Council, Kevin Dicks, the chief executive of Worcestershire County Council, Paul Robinson, and the cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, Councillor Ken Pollock, were also in attendance.
