REFUGEES who have settled in Redditch are being asked to share their stories as part of a Lottery-backed project.

People In Motion - a charity that provides support and aid to displaced people - have received a grant of £10,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Their scheme is titled 'Welcoming Refugees in Rural Communities Through the Generations' and will take place across Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

Working with technology firm Collar and Tie (C&T), People In Motion are creating four films - ‘Those who came’, ‘Those that helped them’, ‘The changes they’ve made’, and ‘Looking to the future’.

To do so, they wish to celebrate refugee stories from those came to settle in Herefordshire and Worcestershire in order to seek a safer life over the years as well as those who have been involved in welcoming refugees into their communities.

Community events will be held at the beginning of September - including one in Bromsgrove - inviting people to get involved in the new project.

The charity says it 'wants to showcase the great contributions refugees have made and will continue to do so in the areas and communities of Herefordshire and Worcestershire'.

Kirsty Fraser, chairperson of People in Motion said: “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and are very excited that the project will celebrate both refugees and those rural communities that work hard to welcome people throughout Hereford and Worcestershire."

Naomi Wood, Lead Animateur at C&T, said: “It is so important that these stories aren’t lost, they’re a part of our contemporary history.

"Through the project we want to use film and modern technology to help elevate these stories and give them the platform they deserve.

"We are so excited to be a part of this project and we hope the films bring about understanding and respect for these communities and the volunteers who supported their journey.”
