DOZENS of schools were forced to close and people were advised to stay indoors as heavy rain saw flash floods on roads in and around the region yesterday, with more expected today.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning with rain lashing down from the early hours, leading to a catalogue of problems for motorists.
Worcestershire County Council's highways boss John Fraser said there were "many problem areas".
While many stretches of road were being closed, the A449 towards Claines remained open yesterday afternoon, despite being described as a 'mudslide' by motorists.
Paul Kear, who was driving in his Mini Cooper from Stourport to Worcester down the A449, said the road was "absolute chaos across both lanes".
Almost 150 flood warnings remain in place across Britain after more heavy rain fell last night.
While the Met Office is forecasting the rains to finally ease off today, heavy downpours overnight have increased the number of flood warnings in effect.
The Environment Agency (EA) has posted 147 current flood warnings – in which immediate action is required – with 145 in England and two in Wales.
There are also 174 flood alerts current, warning people to be prepared for possible flooding.
The warnings and alerts cover most of England.
