WANTON vandalism of a Bromsgrove sports club's play den that was built in memory of a former member is causing heartache for his family.
Hoodlums have kicked in the sides of the wooden hut, erected in memory of Christopher Gower, at Bromsgrove Cricket, Hockey and Tennis Club.
Christopher, who lived in Redditch but grew up in Bromsgrove and was a junior cricketer with the club, died aged 24 in a road accident in 2012.
The play area was constructed in tribute the following year but is now in urgent need of repair after vandals struck.
Christopher's father Dave Gower, a former chairman of the St Godwald's Road club, believes, due to witness accounts, that a gang of teenagers is responsible and has pleaded with them to leave the area alone.
Mr Gower told the Advertiser: "The play area has been there for seven years and the kids love it.
"But, for some bizarre reason, a group of teenagers, who we think are 14-16, have started damaging it.
"It's just out-and-out unnecessary damage.
"These kids are probably unaware of the significance of the den and I would appeal to them to leave it alone."
Other incidents of vandalism - including damage to signs, bollards and netting - in recent weeks and months have forced the club to install CCTV to deter vandals.
"Residents on the local estate are aware of the problem and are keeping their eyes open as well," Mr Gower added.
The club plans to have the hut repaired and were also hoping to install swings next year but the issues are costing it money.
"It's costing us, as a small club, a substantial, significant amount," added Mr Gower.
