A LARGE group of youths was spotted breaching coronavirus social distancing rules at a Halesowen park over the bank holiday weekend.

Councillor Joe Roberts called the police after spotting the group of youths at Hurst Green Park on the evening of Sunday (May 24) - he said they were drinking alcohol and acting in an anti-social manner intimidating other park users.

He is requesting an urgent meeting with the head of Dudley Police Chief Supt Sally Bourner after numerous reports of flouting of social distancing at the park, off Moat Drive and said he will "not stand by whilst local residents are intimidated whilst using their local park by those who feel they are above the law."

The 21-year-old said he has received a string of reports from residents concerned that people at the park are ignoring social distancing rules designed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Reports have included youngsters playing football as well as people having ripped off the tape cordoning off the gym equipment and then using it for workouts.

Dudley News:

Cllr Roberts, who is co-ordinating the Dudley Council for Voluntary Services response to the coronavirus crisis across Halesowen, posted to the Hurst Green Community Watch Facebook page: "I went for a evening walk around Hurst green park.

"When I got to the park I noticed a large illegal gathering of youths who were being loud, anti social, drinking alcohol and intimidating to those who were using the park.

"Whilst walking around the park I called the police and asked if they could come down to break up the gathering.

"Illegal take overs of the park like this are unacceptable and cannot keep happening.

"Although I have previously discussed with the police about them attending the park more at the moment, I will request an urgent meeting with the head of Dudley Police to discuss this in more detail and ensure a robust plan is put in place.

"I will continue to check the park this coming week to ensure no more illegal gatherings take place, but if anyone does see youths gathering, please report it to me or the police.

"I will not stand by whilst local residents are intimidated whilst using their local park by those who feel they are above the law."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police confirmed they received a report of suspected breaches of social distancing rules at Hurst Green Park on Sunday (May 24), but no immediate police attendance followed.

Under current rules people can meet one other person from a different household outdoors - but following social distancing guidelines.

People can exercise outdoors as often as they wish - again following social distancing guidelines.

People can use outdoor sports courts or facilities, such as a tennis or basketball court, or a golf course – with members of their own household, or with one other person while staying two metres apart. The use of an outdoor gym or playground is still prohibited.
