TWO new memorial gates have been unveiled in Eardisland to commemorate two young men from the parish who gave their lives in the First World War.

The new gates begin another two Eardisland Memorial Walks dedicated to the soldiers, Privates Thomas Cook and John Lewis, who both served 1/1st Herefords.

Thomas died at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli, aged 18, while 33-year-old John was killed during the Battle of Khuweife.

The gates were officially opened by Air Vice Marshall Mike Smart, Deputy Chair of Hereford’s First World War Commemoration Committee and Lt Col Andy Taylor, the County Colonel of The Rifles and curator of Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum, on the eve of the Armistice centenary.

Trumpeter Stewart Brain blew the Last Post and Reveille, looked on by Lucton School army cadets.

Each memorial gate was crafted from Herefordshire oak and features a brass plaque inscribed with the name of the soldier it is dedicated to.

They were built by charity Choices Foundation, with donations from the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum and the Pippin Trust.
