WORK carried out at a Hereford brook aims to increase the population of water flies.

Brook clearance was carried out as part of the Hereford Yazor Brook restoration project.

The work, undertaken by Bugs and Beasties working in partnership with Hereford Wildlife Trust, involved clearing part of the brook along the footpath behind Widemarsh Common and the Heineken factory.

Richard Fishbourne, from Bugs and Beasties, said: "Letting more light into the brook will increase the population of water fly life like mayflies and damselflies and in doing so provide more food for fish and birds such as minnow and kingfishers.

"Doing the work along this footpath has also made the footpath feel safer for pedestrians and enhanced the landscape beauty with the tall lime trees and silver birch on the back of the brook now becoming clearly visible for the enjoyment of all."
