AN ABBEYDORE cidermaker has opened a micropub in Hereford's historic Buttermarket.

Serving a range of Gwatkin's Cider's award-winning ciders and perries alongside beers and lager from Stoke Prior's Wye Valley Brewery for consumption both on and off the premises, the micropub is the brainchild of cidermaker Denis Gwatkin.

Denis, who has been making cider for almost 30 years, was spurred on in his decision to open Gwatkin's House of Cider in the Buttermarket by the ongoing refurbishment and regeneration work at the iconic building.

He joins several other artisan food and drink producers who have already moved into the building in recent months, taking their places alongside the Buttermarket's more traditional market businesses.

And there are further plans afoot to open the upper floors of the building, to encourage more traders move into the historic Buttermarket.

"This is a great opportunity for us to be able to sell our ciders and perries in the heart of Hereford," Denis said.

"We have a successful shop at our farm in Abbeydore, but not everyone can get out to it, so this is our way of bringing our shop to the centre of Hereford.

"We're stocking our full range of award-winning ciders and perries alongside other locally sourced drinks, all chosen to complement the range of food available in the Buttermarket."

Gwatkin's House of Cider at the Buttermarket is open from 9am to 4.45pm Monday to Saturday.
