POLICE officers are 'calling time on knife crime' as members of the public won't be prosecuted for carrying them, if they hand them in to the police.

Until Sunday (September 22) a knife bin will be situated in the public area of Hereford police station so the public can dispose of unwanted knives anonymously with no questions asked.

No personal details will be given, but West Mercia Police said if it's thought the knife has been used in a criminal offence police will seek to carry out an investigation.

The national campaign aims to prevent unwanted knives from getting into the wrong hands and being used in crime.

Local policing commander Sue Thomas said: "Hereford has a relatively low number of knife related incidents but it is important we do all we can to reduce this number even further."
