THE MP who serves towns and villages on Herefordshire's border with Wales is pushing to reinstate access to cash free of charge for people in Hay-on-Wye.

Fay Jones, who represents the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency, said the company behind the only ATM in the town centre is looking at ways to "get around this issue" of the 99p charge.

It's the border town's only cash machine available 24 hours a day, with the ATM at the Co-op only available during opening hours.

"I have had a number of conversations with LINK who operate the cash machine at the post office in Hay on Wye," Conservative MP Ms Jones said.

"While we are not able to remove the charge at the moment, we are still pushing for residents to have free access to their cash.

"At present, the only other option is for residents to travel to the Co-Op on the other side of the town which isn't an acceptable way forward.

"LINK have been very positive in the way they have engaged and are exploring a range of possibilities to get around this issue.

"I will be meeting them again in the House of Commons in the coming weeks."

Ms Jones, who won the seat from the Liberal Democrats in the December general election, added residents having access to their cash is essential.

"I will continue to press the cash machine operators to make sure there are sufficient machines which do not charge," she added.
