I was interested to read your two recent correspondents regarding Covid-19.

David Delaney is right that we have to get the country back to work as we are economically bankrupt already.

We should be careful, however, not to play down the dangers of the coronavirus. Covid-19 is a very nasty virus. It attacks all parts of the body, mainly lungs, but also heart, kidneys, liver and the brain

Some people who survive not only take a long time to recover but may never recover and will have to live with ailments for the rest of their lives.

As to death rates, this seems to be around 0.5 to 1% on average.

However, anyone over 60 has a much higher chance of dying, around five to 10%, with men and anyone with heart or lung conditions, diabetes or obese, in an ethnic minority, or being more elderly, is even more vulnerable and could be as high as 20%. That is a one in five chance of dying!

That is why so many elderly people died in care homes and why the government advises self-isolation.

This virus is still circulating in the country. There is a background level of 1,000 new cases a day (that may actually be 10,000 as not all cases are detected) with 100 people dying.

I don’t want that to be me and you don’t want that to be you or your loved ones.

Take care of yourself and others and don’t think it can’t happen to you because it can and already has to more than 44,000 people!
