RESTORATION work is continuing at Hay-on-Wye's iconic castle, with new ways of working bringing real progress to the site once again.

The coronavirus pandemic has affected nearly all aspects of life in Hay, and the work to restore Hay Castle has been no exception.

The site's office has been closed, and all but the most basic work on site was shut down for over a month.

But now, a spokesperson said, as the team adjust to different ways of working, they are excited to see real progress being made on the site.

With keeping staff and visitors safe the number one priority on the site, contractors, John Weaver Construction, have brought in working practices to protect their team, including continued social distancing, cleaning facilities, and PPE.

Hay Castle Trust said they had hoped to be opening their doors this year, but sadly they have to accept that this is not possible.

"Of course, our first thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, who are suffering from illness themselves, or who are grappling with financial hardship and uncertainty," a trust spokesperson said.

"Hay Castle has stood watch over our town for 900 years, and this delay in restoring it to its former glory is not the end of the world in the grand scheme of things. We are now looking forward to spring 2021 when we will finally be able to welcome visitors.

"Although the site remains closed to all but essential visitors, we are keen for you to see the progress that is being made. Many of you will have been using video technology like Zoom and Skype to stay in touch with friends and family, and we would love you to join us on a special ‘virtual guided tour’ of the construction site at 4pm on July 30.

"Managing Director Nancy Lavin Albert will use photos and a bit of video footage to point out areas of interest and explain how the restoration process is taking shape.

"After the virtual tour, there will be an opportunity to ask questions about the project. The event is free to attend, but we would appreciate it if you could RSVP by emailing info@haycastletrust.org so that we can send you an invitation to the video call."
