COUNCILLOR Lynn Denham, the Labour Party’s parliamentary candidate for Worcester, is supporting her party’s calls for Prime Minister Theresa May to rule out no deal.

The PM made a statement on Monday, saying she was pushing ahead with talks including on the Northern Ireland border, and would be taking the conclusions from discussions back to the European Union.

Yesterday MPs gave eight amendments in Commons to Mrs May’s plans, which included motions to stop a no-deal Brexit and to extend the deadline for leaving the EU.

MPs are due to vote on Mrs May’s Brexit proposals on Tuesday, January 29.

Speaking after the latest developments, the Worcester City councillor said: “The plan B Brexit proposal that Theresa May placed before parliament has made no significant changes to plan A which was overwhelmingly rejected by MPs.

“Despite suffering the largest defeat of any government in British history she is not listening to the feedback and criticisms.

“Labour are tabling an amendment to rule out a disastrous no deal and allow parliament to consider and vote on options to break the impasse.

“That would include an alternative Brexit deal that protects jobs, living standards and workers’ rights and environmental standards, including through a comprehensive customs union with a UK say and strong single market deal.

“And the option of a public vote on a deal or proposal on the UK’s future relationship with the European Union.”

MP Robin Walker, and Brexit minister in the PM’s government, has continued to stress the only way to prevent no deal was through a deal, adding: “Part of our job in government is to reduce the uncertainty.”
