A BUDGET supermarket has asked the council for permission to build a temporary car park because its current one is not big enough.

Lidl, which has a supermarket in Broadway Road in Evesham, has submitted a planning application to Wychavon District Council to build a new 65-space temporary car park next to its store which can be used for up to five years.

Lidl said it needs a bigger car park to meet current and future demand and cannot expand its current car park any further.

The car park would also include space for eight bicycles and three disabled car parking spaces.

A new trolley bay would also be built.

The current car park contains 75 car parking spaces with six disable spaces and four child and parent spaces.

Allowing the extra car park would push space numbers up to 140 - 18 more spaces than approved as part of permission to replace the old Lidl supermarket in November 2016.

Although permission to build the car park would only be temporary, Lidl has said it would tarmac the land rather than use gravel.

The temporary car park would be built on land previously occupied by St Richard's Hospice which was demolished as part of the expansion work.
