MUSIC lovers found a way to celebrate Independent Record Store day in Worcester despite the city having no independent music shops.

That has been the situation since the much-loved Rise store closed in the Crowngate Shopping Centre in 2018.

Undeterred, music enthusiasts wanted to bring the indie store spirit to the city, so with the help of music scouts Rita and Malicia Dabrowicz, a pop up store was held on Saturday.

The store, which was set up in Worcester Arts Workshop, offered the chance for unsigned artists to sell their records and merchandise to the public while the audience could also get the chance to meet them.

Among the artists in attendance were Meme Detroit, Redwood and Hannah Law, who all gave performances on a stage set up at the Sansome Street venue.

And the event was headlined by Worcester-based poet and singer Iggy Cuthbert.

Hannah Phillips, director of transformation at Worcester Arts Workshop, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting this event at Worcester Arts Workshop and we hope it will be the first of many.

“It is extremely important we support our local emerging talent and offer artists opportunities to sell and perform their work.”

Artist Ruben Seabright said: “It has been a fun event.

“Rise is missed, I would like to see Worcester have a independent music shop again, to give us guys a chance.”

Organiser Malicia Dabrowicz added that around 50 people had popped in, in the morning and had been enjoying the performances.

The first Record Store Day was in 2008 and the event is designed to celebrate more traditional, physical music formats, with artists appearing at the stores to promote their music.
