A SCHOOL in Worcester is celebrating after being graded as ‘good’ in its latest Ofsted report.

Nunnery Wood High School was visited by inspectors on March 29 who said the school had improved significantly overall.

In the report, inspectors said: “Staff have created an ethos of excellence and ambition.

“The school’s enrichment programme reflects a strong spirit of selflessness, exemplified by pupils’ fundraising work for charity.”

One parent mentioned in the report praised the school, saying: “Nunnery Wood High School is a wonderful school at the heart of Worcester, with excellent results and facilities.”

Another said that, despite being a large school, each child is treated as an individual.

The report also praised the school’s work to improving the education of disadvantaged pupils, saying: “Pastoral leaders have been robust in their work to increase the attendance of disadvantaged pupils and reduce persistent absence.

“This has resulted in a significant reduction in persistent absenteeism, and disadvantaged pupils’ overall attendance is now close to that of other pupils nationally.”

The inspection, which was over one-day, was to check whether or not the school had maintained its existing "Good" rating, with the possibility of being upgraded to "Outstanding" after a new inspection.

Head Teacher Stephen Powell welcomed the report, saying: “We are delighted at the result of this one-day inspection.

"Our inspection was for one-day and tested whether or not Nunnery remains “Good”.

"Although one-day inspections cannot upgrade to “Outstanding”, the Ofsted team were so impressed by what they saw, they have recommended that Nunnery is fast-tracked to a 2-day inspection (Section 5) so that a new judgement may be given.

"This means there is a possibility that we can be upgraded to outstanding.

"One of the big steps forward we have taken is to increase the amount of extra-curricular activities available to pupils including visits and guest speakers.

"I have said to pupils, staff and parents that we are so proud of everyone for their hard work.

"It has been a real team effort to get to this point."
