A MAN from Worcester who is battling cancer is gearing up for an epic 245-mile walk for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Martyn Wells, who is from Worcester, will walk through North-west Scotland from Fort William to Cape Wrath, ascending over 45,000ft in the process over 10 days, in what is described as Britain's toughest long-distance walk.
Mr Wells, 50, Spoke about the challenges he has faced and how Macmillan has supported him.
He said: "What have Macmillan done for me? Well, they were there from the day I was diagnosed.
"The horrible moment when you find out that you have cancer.
"They stepped in and gave me advice and took me through the processes I needed to take care of.
"They talked to me about the things I needed to do with my children, how I should talk to work, things I might need to consider f
"When my wife and I got married, they made sure that I had my treatments around the period when we went away to get married so that I would be able to recover from my surgery in time.
"They have given me a lot of nutritional advice on how to live life without a stomach and believe me, that can be pretty challenging.
"None of that would have been possible without the help and support of Macmillan Cancer Support."
He added: "At the back of my mind, I always knew I had to do something further for Macmillan and so this year, five months after I took those tentative steps and learned to walk again, I’ll be taking part in thhe Cape Wrath Trail 2019.
"There are no cosy B and Bs along the way and there are no comfortable five-star hotels, so my sleeping bag, underneath my tent on the 15kg backpack on my back that I need to carry, will be the only company I get, along with a few expedition members, midges and a few tics."
In February 2019, Mr Wells had a severe adverse reaction to the immunotherapy treatment he was receiving for cancer.
He developed double pneumonia, which quickly became chest sepsis, and ended up spending 5 weeks in hospital, including 15 nights on a life support machine in intensive care. In March 2019, he took his first steps.
