From a convent school to the blues isn't a typical route for any musician, but that's the path taken by Zoe Schwarz.

And now Zoe, a classically-trained musician, and her Blue Commotion will be coming to Worcester's Huntingdon Hall with the aim of "refreshing the blues genre with eclectic arrangements, virtuosic playing and vocal prowess".

A spokesman said: "With an exciting live set based around rootsy original songs, strong catchy riffs and exciting grooves, they mix old school tradition with contemporary flare and sophistication.

"Zoe’s dynamic and commanding vocal delivery is complimented by the unmistakable touch and flow of Rob Koral (guitar), and the highly accomplished rhythm section of Pete Whittaker (Hammond organ), and Paul Robinson (drums - Nina Simone, Van Morrison, Eric Bibb and more)."

The spokesman added: "A very young Zoe’s musical journey started by being brought up at a convent boarding school singing sacred music in church several times a week. A natural singer, Zoe was chosen as a regular soloist and also often conducted. Zoe broadened her musical intake by defying school rules and listening to John Peek under the bed-cloths late at night on a tiny transistor radio (and loving bands like the Stranglers).

"Zoe was introduced to Billie Holiday by her uncle Colin in her early teens, this was inadvertently the crucial stepping stone to Zoe’s natural home of singing the blues. By the time Zoe left school she had achieved grade 8 piano, clarinet, music theory and singing (not to mention hours knocking around on an acoustic guitar whenever possible and dabbling in early song writing)."

There is no rigid musical template for Blue Commotion, "the only stipulation is that it feels good, tastes good and sounds good…"

The spokesman added: "Come and catch them live at Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall."
