TWENTY youngsters have auditioned successfully for membership of WODYS – Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society youth section.

And now they have the chance of being chosen for Shrek the Musical, which will come to The Swan Theatre in Worcester, next summer.

A spokesman said: "They were among more than 40 eight to 18-year-olds who sang, danced and acted in a bid to join the group.

"Soon they will be up before a panel of judges again as they compete with 60 other members of WODYS for parts in Shrek The Musical, to be staged at Worcester’s Swan Theatre from Tuesday, August 4 to Saturday, August 8, 2020."

WODYS chairman and director David Humphries said: “The standard at the membership auditions was very high and we were very pleased, but it gave the auditioning committee a difficult job to reach a decision.

"We want to thank everybody who spent time learning the audition piece and it’s a shame that that we are unable to take everyone.

“Unsuccessful candidates are offered a place in the WODYS academy (WODAC). The academy offers coaching in singing, dancing, drama and general stagecraft.

"The workshops culminate in a production for parents and relatives. WODAC members will then have the opportunity to take part in next year’s audition to become a full WODYS’ member."

He added: “I am very pleased with the interest which continues to be shown in WODYS. It is nice to meet so many enthusiastic and dedicated youngsters from all sorts of backgrounds and schools.

"They should be commended.”
