Christmas festivities began in Worcester tonight when sparkling lights were switched on at Cathedral Square as part of a fun-packed family evening.

The official switch on by the Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Allah Ditta, was followed by a community Christmas carol sing-a-long.

White and gold coloured lights were hired by the city council to bring festive sparkle to the city centre.

Fairy lights have also been installed in trees along the High Street, creating an extra magical effect.

The event signals the start of Christmas late night shopping in Worcester city centre, with many shops staying open until 8pm on Thursdays.

The night saw appearances from the Swan Theatre pantomime cast - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - and Rock Choir singers and was hosted by BBC Hereford and Worcester’s Malcolm Boyden and Elliott Webb.
