TWO men who tried to break into a Halfords shop at a Worcester retail park have avoided prison sentences.

Stephen Kearney and Darren Roger Smith have both pleaded guilty to trespassing at the Halfords at Elgar Retail Park in Blackpole.

Kearney, aged 40, of Chedworth Drive, Worcester, was sentenced to a 16-week prison sentence which was suspended for 12 months.

He has been placed under a curfew between 7pm and 7am with an electronic tag, as part of his sentence.

Kearney was also ordered to pay £307 with fines including a £122 victim surcharge and £185 costs.

Smith, aged 32, of Lane House, Worcester, was made subject to a community order.

He has also been placed under a curfew between 7pm and 7am until February 3, 2020.

But he was not given a suspended prison sentence, although he was fined £275.

Smith was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £90 and £185 costs.

The men appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, December 10.

The offence took place on Monday, December 9.

Police were called to the Elgar Retail Park at around 4.15am to what was believed to be intruders inside one of the shop units.

An eyewitness said two people wearing black clothes and hoodies were spotted climbing onto the roof and running along the top, fleeing from police officers.

Police said there was concern for the welfare of one of the men as he was threatening to harm himself.

The witness said a police negotiator was able to persuade the men to come down, and firefighters using a ladder brought the duo back to ground at around 7.10am.

As a precaution, the retail park was closed in the morning whilst the police, fire and ambulance service worked together to deal with the incident.
