THE media is churning out one Corona virus story after another, but we really should not panic.

Authorities around the world are doing everything they should be to protect us and although some of the images of people in hazmat suits might look scary, they are nothing to worry about, they are simply doing their jobs.

The measures are not equal to the seriousness of the virus, just the speed which it can spread.

Many people are becoming petrified of this virus and I know one person who is anxious at the mere mention of it.

These fears are largely illogical.

However reading through comments on our website I am appreciative of how sensible our readers’ responses have been. It seems most of you have done enough research, and have enough common sense to have a calm conversation about this, offering a lot of helpful comments and advice to each other, using the internet as a tool to spread comfort and information rather than hysteria.

Perhaps the exaggerated memes, (edited photos for comic effect on Facebook) are not helping. The constant joke “I did not survive the 90s rave scene to be taken out by a virus named after a light beer” is getting very annoying.

Not that I don’t feel awful for people flying home into quarantine. It must be an unpleasant and distressing interruption to their lives, but they will have been told that what is happening to them is the best procedure to keep people safe and they will instantly have access to the best, and most prepared medical care in the unlikely case that they do come down with the virus.

Even if someone has spent time in China recently the chance of them contracting the virus is low. The virus has been well contained in China and beyond.

While the death count in China is now at 425, the number of cases is 20,000.

Most of the deaths are associated with other illnesses, age or immune deficiency.

More people die from the common flu each year than corona virus.

We are lucky to live in a country that has the resources and access to medical care that we have. Which is another reason why I am not worried about this.

The only thing we can really do is follow the advice given.
