A MAN was rescued from the River Severn in Worcester last night.

Police confirmed they had been called to the river near Worcester Bridge following concerns for a man's welfare.

They pulled the man out of the water and he was then taken to hospital.

A police spokesman said: "Shortly before 12.25am officers attended Worcester Bridge following concerns for the welfare of a man.

"He fell into the water and after being recovered from the river was taken to hospital."

A Diglis resident said they were there at the time and saw what was happening.

They said: "I saw a fellow in the river illuminated by torchlight from several officers on both river banks just past Diglis Hotel.

"I saw four or five uniformed officers - he was floating down the middle of the river.

"It was a cold night and I was concerned for his welfare.

"He was shouting and seemed very upset.

"The officers were doing a really good job and were very professional in the way they were reassuring him."
