RESIDENTS have spoken of their concerns over a busy stretch of road after a woman suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a car.
Following the collision between a pedestrian and car in Astwood Road, Rainbow Hill on Monday evening, people who live in the area told the Worcester News they felt the section of road was dangerous.
The female pedestrian was treated at the scene before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham where she remains in a serious condition.
Resident Jemma Ellington, 30, who lives in Astwood Road, said: “I’ve got two little girls, both aged 18 months. I’m terrified now that they are getting to walking stage they’ll run out onto the road.
“I’ve been hit by a wing mirror from a car when I’ve been walking on the pavement outside my house before – cars squeeze past each other down this road."
Marianne Jones, 46, who works at Scales pharmacy in Astwood Road, said some drivers speeded in that road.
“People tend to speed too fast down this road," she said. "It does worry me.”
Tracey Humphries, 46, who works at The Full English Cafe in Astwood Road, added: “You do get cars speeding up and down here and some of my customers have commented on it.”
A salon owner, who did not want to be named, who works in Astwood Road, said: “Drivers around here have no patience. Pedestrians don’t wait for the lights to change – they cut across anywhere on the road instead of using the crossing.”
City councillor Adrian Gregson, who represents the Rainbow Hill ward, said: “The problem is not just on Astwood Road but Tolladine Road and Brickfields Road, where drivers not from the area use the roads as ‘rat runs’ to get into the city.
“They are not local and don’t know the area or the camber of the roads.
Fellow Worcester city councillor Tom Collins, also for the Rainbow Hill ward, added: “It’s a busy stretch of road and it’s quite narrow - it’s understandable that residents have concerns."
A spokesman for the highways authority, Worcestershire County Council, said: “We are currently liaising with West Mercia Police about the incident.
"If any residents have concerns about road safety issues, we would encourage them to contact us directly so we may investigate their concerns.”
