Around four caravans and accompanying vehicles have set up camp in the Tybridge Street car park near to Cripplegate Park.

They were spotted there on Tuesday morning. It is not known exactly when they arrived.

A City Council spokesman said: “City council officers went to Tybridge Street car park at around 7.00pm on June 23 and served travellers on site with a ‘Notice of Direction to Leave’.

“The notice required them to vacate the site immediately.

“Where illegal occupation of land has taken place, the council will follow its procedures to resolve the situation in the shortest possible timescale.

“We can’t comment further at present, given it is a live issue that may necessitate further legal action being taken.”

A spokeswoman for the travelling group told one of our reporters: “We’re used to being evicted and we are not here to cause any trouble.

“We have plenty of bottled water and the men can wash in the river [River Severn].

“We’ll move on when the time comes.”

Our reporter noted movement in and out of the site by travellers, including visits to the Aldi supermarket nearby.

It is understood there has been anti-social behaviour at nearby Hickory's Smokehouse but the pub denied this.

Ward city councillor Richard Udall said: “I have seen evidence of a number of serious problems which are associated with the illegal occupation of the car park.

“There are no excuses for what has happened and no sympathy for their circumstances, especially when they cause such problems." Cllr Udall would not elaborate on what the problems were.
