RESIDENTS of a busy central area in Worcester have rallied together to petition for traffic calming measures after multiple accidents.

The junction of Flag Meadow Walk and Shrubbery Avenue is described by locals as “an accident hot spot.”

Matthew Jenkins, county councillor for St Stephen division started up the online petition following a crash last month.

The dramatic photo shows the aftermath of the car crash at the junction on June 2.

The ambulance service were called and both drivers, a man and woman, were treated for minor injuries.

Cllr Jenkins said: “That accident was not the first at this junction and without intervention it won’t be the last. There have been repeated incidents at the junction of Flag Meadow Walk and Shrubbery Avenue and clearly measures so far to tackle this problem have failed.

“This is a residential area with four schools in the vicinity. The roads are narrow with many parked cars, so travelling much faster than 20mph is inherently dangerous.

“Drivers often use this route as a cut through to avoid traffic on the main road, often travelling at dangerous speeds.

“In order to protect local residents and especially children going to and from school, it is essential to introduce a 20 mph speed limit as well as any appropriate traffic calming measures.”

So far 193 residents have signed the change.org petition urging the council to install traffic calming measures.

Cllr Jenkins added: “I think in the short term the council are going to be repainting the road and making sure the junction is clearly signposted - a lot of people don’t seem to realise it is there until it is too late.

“But, in the long term we need to look at a more permanent solution. One of the residents has suggested a raised area across the junction to slow traffic.”
