A 31-year-old man who admitted stealing from a shop in Evesham was told to stop eating in court.

Tony Davis was told by magistrates to stop eating in the dock to which he replied: "I'm so sorry."

Davis of Rynal Place, Evesham, admitted stealing a stereo key worth £5 from Halfords in the town's Four Pools Lane on February 16 this year.

Ralph Robyns-Landricombe, prosecuting, said Davis was one of two men to enter the store and walk to the radio department at around 2pm.

He said a member of staff approached both men, asking if she could help 'but she received no reply'.

Davis picked up the stereo key and left without paying. He made a 'full and frank admission' to the theft.

Mark Sheward said Davis had entered a guilty plea at the earliest possible opportunity and asked that he be given credit for that.

He said the man Davis was with had promised to lend him the £5 but had changed his mind. Davis then stole the item.

"He bitterly regrets his decision" said Mr Sheward.

The solicitor said Davis, who now works as a landscape gardener, had 'changed his life around in the last two years' and was 'no longer on drugs'.

"Hopefully he's making something of himself" Mr Sheward told the bench.

The defendant himself said: "It was a very stupid mistake."

Magistrates fined him £200, ordered him to pay £185 costs, a victim surcharge of £32 and compensation to Halfords of £5.
