OUR Pub Of The Week is The Chestnut Tree Inn, and that will be music to the ears of its regular clientele – all the more so since live music returns to the venue this weekend.

The pub in Lansdowne Road has been under the expert supervision of quirky landlord Colin ‘Mad Pierre’ Robinson, who has run things for eight years.

His current team of Rob, Nicky, Sarah, Maggs and Donna help to run the a community-based local and live music venue, which was previously a sports bar.

‘Mad Pierre’ is well known in the city, not least for his work on Christmas Day, when he throws open the doors of the pub and serves up a festive dinner with all the trimmings for the homeless and the lonely.

He said: “I’ve got no family myself so they are my extended family on Christmas Day. I think it’s a good cause.”

Roasts are also served the year round on a Sunday and there are also summer barbecues, with a great beer garden to enjoy them in, along with any one of a fine selection of real ales or continental lagers and, in normal times, light jazz or classical live music, for which the pub is famous in the city.

Of course, these have not been normal times, and Mad Pierre and his team have been hard at work meeting all the restrictive challenges brought about by Covid-19.

He said: “We did risk assessments prior to reopening and readdressed our cleaning regimens.

“We have installed hand sanitisers and social distancing measures with a one way system for busier sessions.

“We have provided appropriate PPE for all staff and the relevant training. Track and trace is available electronically complying with the digital storage legislation.

“Other than that, the most challenging thing about running the pub is the pricing and keeping abreast of the legislation.

“To compensate, being at the heart of the community is absolutely the best thing about running the pub.

“Once the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted we will have live music back three times a week. For now we have acoustic music every Sunday afternoon. Tomorrow (Sunday, July 26), the Ralph Allin string quartet is appearing and renowned guitarist Vo Fletcher will be playing the week after (August 2).”

Here’s hoping it’s not too much longer before the everything’s back in harmony around the city.
