THIS month I would like to dedicate my column to our inspirational hospice teams, who in the face of unprecedented challenges continue to give the same uncompromising love and commitment to children and families they always have.

The care team at Acorns for the Three Counties has been on the frontline of this crisis, providing emergency and end of life care for every family that needs it.

The pandemic has meant many things inside the Worcester-based hospice are a little different from how they were previously. One of the more significant changes is personal protective equipment.

While PPE is essential for the protection of children, families and our staff, it does present challenges. Face masks and shields do limit facial expressions and can look a little scary, not to mention they are quite uncomfortable.

Rest assured our care teams radiate the same warmth with friendly smiles that reach their eyes, their calming tone of voice and their welcoming body language. And the discomfort pales into insignificance when safety is concerned – we wouldn’t have it any other way.

It would be remiss of me to not recognise that our ability to play such a vital role in this crisis is only possible thanks to the fantastically generous support of this community. Because of you, our hospice in Worcester remains at the heart of our Covid-19 emergency response.

One example of the remarkable dedication shown by our loyal supporters is the brilliant Alex Grove.

Hot on the heels of retiring from professional rugby, the ex-Worcester Warrior decided to do something less than 2,000 individuals have achieved – complete a solo swim of the English Channel.

A year’s worth of preparation was almost scuppered due to the pandemic, but Alex’s dogged determination saw him persevere despite a 10-week run with absolutely no swim training.

Next week he will get his chance. Just getting to this point is no mean feat, no only has he successfully completed month after month of gruelling training but so far he’s raised a staggering £18,200.

On behalf of everyone here at Acorns, may I wish him the very best of luck. Please join us as we cheer him on to success.
