CARERS who usually organise a trip to the beach for adults with learning disabilities are hoping to bring the seaside to Worcester this year - but they need your help.

Sunflower Gardens, where the adults are supported at home, had to cancel its annual outing due to the pandemic.

Tom Brown, service manager for Sunflower Gardens, based in St John’s, said: “ All of our clients have been shielding during the Covid-19 pandemic and are desperate for their annual trip to the beach.

“Due to their lack of understanding and not being able to socially distance, the residents have unfortunately missed out on fish and chips and hook-a-duck by the sea.”

The home in St John’s supports four adults who have learning disabilities.

Tom added: “Resident Chester O’Neill feels sad not going as he has gone every summer since he can remember.

“He is now a young 80 - another reason to make this beach day a success.

“Maureen misses buying items from the sea shop as she loves to create things and is very artistic.

“Laurence Williams misses taking photos in a photo booths and singing karaoke.”

Dawn Green,63, said: “I miss hamburgers.”

Tom added: “We asking for readers if they are willing to loan or donate items to our house to enable our clients to have their very own beach in their garden.

“Items we would like include are Punch and Judy, hook-a-duck, sand and any art work showing the seaside to bring the garden to life.

“Staff and residents really deserve a break after coping with lockdown, which has been difficult for us all, but for someone with a learning disability the change in routine can have a huge impact.

“We’ve been wearing PPE in hot weather which is not very comfortable even on a cold day.

“Also in operation is a one-in, one-out policy at the house to keep everyone safe.”

Other items which Tom is looking for include buckets and spades and any other beach items.
