AN IMPRESSIVE return of eight wins from 10 games has put Droitwich Spa Hockey Club men’s firsts on a high going into the Christmas break.

Droitwich are in second place, two points behind Midlands T3 South West One leaders University of Birmingham after beating Bournville 2-1.

The first goal came from a move down the right as Andrew Rollason drove to the baseline before pulling back for Lee Wakelam to pounce and score.

This woke Bournville up as they began to pressurise the Spa goal, winning a series of corners.

The home side were holding firm until they lost possession in the middle of the park. Bournville then won a penalty corner and converted it to draw level just before the break.

Bournville had some lucky breaks with a bouncing shot wrong footing the keeper only for a defender to poke out a stick to prevent it from crossing the line.

Wakelam also squandered presentable opportunities in the circle but Droitwich’s pressure told five minutes from time.

The ball was played into David Hindle who was on hand to send a looping deflection over the keeper for the winner.

There was disappointment for the seconds and thirds who slumped to away defeats at Hampton-in-Arden and Finchfield respectively.

Meanwhile, the women’s firsts lost 2-1 at Bromsgrove.
