WORCESTER athlete Ben Clarke clinched a silver medal at the England Athletics Senior Open and U20 Combined Events Championships in Sheffield.

The former Chase School pupil achieved lifetime best performances in four of the seven heptathlon indoor events, finishing with 5,149 points.

Day one saw Clarke record 7.35 seconds in the 60-metre sprint, 6.60m in the long jump, 10.68m in the shot put and 2.01m in the high jump.

He then registered 8.77s in the 60m hurdles, 3.90m in the pole vault and two minutes 34 seconds in the 1,000m.

This earned him the national under 23 silver medal and an entry on the UK all-time list.

He also placed seventh in the overall men's competition, taking the gold medal for the Midlands region.

Clarke, who has worked hard to return to fitness after major hip surgery in 2017, said: "I am pleased with this performance as it sets me up for the outdoor season.

"I would like to improve my decathlon score this summer and am hoping to be considered for a place in the England combined events team."
