IN-FORM flyer Tom Howe admits he has a “weird obsession” with the try-line as he aims to end the season as Worcester Warriors’ top finisher.

The 23-year-old wing will make his first start in the Gallagher Premiership this season tomorrow when Warriors tackle Leicester Tigers at Sixways (1pm).

His place in the team is a reward for his sensational try-scoring form in the European Challenge Cup and Premiership Cup this term.

Howe also showed off his predatory skills in the league last Saturday when he got on the end of a superb move in the closing moments of the 47-33 defeat at Harlequins.

The score — which came just three minutes after coming off the bench for his first Premiership appearance of the campaign — has increased his remarkable tally to eight tries in eight games.

“On a personal level it was great to finally get involved in the Premiership and it was a hell of a game,” Howe said.

“It suited my style as it was played at a very fast tempo and it was brilliant to salvage the bonus point.

“When it got to 75 minutes I was looking at the coaches hoping that they would make the call to get me on.

“When I finally came on I was really chuffed so to get the try was an added bonus.”

Howe has a better strike-rate than Warriors’ other wingers Bryce Heem, Josh Adams, Perry Humphreys and Dean Hammond having scored 14 tries in 19 outings since arriving at Sixways in the summer of 2017.

And the former Wasps academy ace is determined to continue his hot streak.

“I love getting over the try-line, every winger does, but I have got a weird obsession with it,” Howe said.

“If I can get over the whitewash that’s a personal tick for me.

“I am a confidence player so getting those five points is important to me and hopefully I carry that on in the games ahead.”

Despite Howe’s purple patch Heem is the leading try-scorer at Warriors this term having crossed the whitewash 10 times.

“Reaching double figures would be nice and finishing top scorer would be nice too but obviously Bryce is in the lead,” Howe said.

“The competition is tough this year with Bryce and Josh in the starting positions.

“But obviously I can learn off them as well so it works both ways.”

Howe burst onto the scene with Wasps, winning the Anglo-Welsh Cup Breakthrough Player Award in 2017, but he insisted scoring tries had not come naturally to him.

“I was previously a centre so I never used to be the one running them in,” said Howe who signed a new one-year contract last week.

“But being a winger you get a few run-ins every now and then.

“I guess (this is the best form of my career). Apart from when I was on loan at Jersey this is the first season where I have been playing more regularly than not.

“It was good to get some early-season game-time in the A-League as it gave me a bit of confidence so if I could get a few more Premiership games and a few more tries that would be massive for me.”
