WARRIORS chief Alan Solomons believes the Premiership’s salary cap “clearly has benefit”.

The £7million cap has come under the spotlight following the decision to relegate domestic and European champions Saracens at the end of the season due to ongoing breaches.

CONFIRMED: Saracens to be relegate at the end of the season

It has been reported that the London club is on course to overspend by up to £2m this season having initially been docked 35 points for past indiscretions.

And while new Sarries bosses have issued an unreserved apology and accepted the drop, their plight has inspired precious little sympathy with comments from Exeter and Bristol branding them as cheats.

One of the counter arguments is the way French Top 14 clubs can dwarf English rivals on the European stage with an allowance of 11.3million euro for the next three seasons.

Solomons declined to comment directly on the fall out but backed the case for financial scrutiny.

“It is felt there are good reasons,” said Solomons.

“First of all the Premiership Rugby board take these decisions and they think through it very carefully.

“You have intelligent people sat on the board and there are good and sound reasons for having a salary cap.

“If you think about it, the NFL in America has a draft system with the idea of creating a more level playing field in terms of competition so there are certainly benefits to it.

“Like with anything in life, there are arguments for and against but the fact of the matter is we have a salary cap, it is something that has been very carefully thought through and clearly has benefit.

“As far as I am concerned we just get on with it and must adhere to the cap.”

Asked for his thoughts on Saracens, Solomons said: “It is not for me, I am entirely focused on Worcester Warriors and think that’s where my focus should be.”

However, Solomons did argue that the only relegation berth being taken would not make a difference to the competitiveness of the league.

“It does not alter anything from our perspective,” he said.

“We want to do as well as we can during the season and end up as high in the table as we are able to. That is our focus.

“I think the league is a very competitive league, full stop.

“All of the teams have quality players and are well coached and prepared, you don’t have an easy game.

“When I coached Super Rugby it was the same, there was no promotion or relegation but there was still no easy game – if you were 10 or 15 per cent off you took 50 points. This is the same level of competition.”
