Donald Glover is among the actors tipped to play the new incarnation of Spider-Man, following Andrew Garfield’s reported departure.
The Community star, who raps under the moniker Childish Gambino, is the bookmakers’ favourite to step into Spider-Man’s suit for the upcoming instalments of the Marvel-Sony films, which will follow Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego from his high school days.
Fury star Logan Lerman and Dylan O’Brien, who was in The Maze Runner, are also said to be in the running to play the web-slinging superhero, reported Variety.
But Twitter has spoken, and Donald – who voiced the superhero in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series and dressed as the character in Community – is a big favourite for the part.
The #donald4spiderman campaign, which began in 2010 and called for Donald to be given the chance to audition for the role, went viral and was supported by Spider-Man’s creator Stan Lee.
Bookies are also tipping Miles Teller, Josh Hutcherson and Kit Harington for the role, as well as Chadwick Boseman, Ansel Elgort and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
Marvel and Sony Pictures announced that they are partnering up for the new movies, which will see Spider-Man first appearing in a Marvel film.
Sources claim that the studio will also begin their search for a new director to take over from Marc Webb.
The new actor will follow in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire, who played the lead role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and Andrew Garfield, who portrayed the superhero in Marc’s two films.
