Personal Overview - Has a media and journalistic background, and has held several Select Committee memberships since entering Parliament. Had her first child in 2000, Angus, the third child for her husband and fellow Tory MP Andrew Mackay. Popular as a reporter in the Press Gallery she went 'native' and decided to do the job herself, a decade on performing a reverse move to the Times' Matthew Parris. Right-wing she comes to the Commons from an untypical Tory background - from a working class Yorkshire upbringing, her father a Halifax lorry driver, she rose via a grammar school education to gain a place at Cambridge. Perhaps surprisingly given her media awareness, leadership contacts, and valuable status as a female Tory, it took 6 years in Parliament before she became an Opposition spokesman, lasting less than two years before returning to the back benches. A committed Portillista in his abortive attempt to gain the Conservative leadership she is ambitious and talented. Announced in May 2009 following controversy surrounding her parliamentary expenses that she would stand down at the next General Election.
Political History - Member of the Young Conservatives (1974-78), Member for Bromsgrove (1997-). Member of the Social Security Select Committee (1997-99), Catering Committee (1998-2005), Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee (1999-2003). Member of the Trade & Industry/Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform/Business & Enterprise Select Committee (2004-09), Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee (2009-). Member of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee (2009-). Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport (2003-04).
Characteristics - Will have media contacts and understanding of the political/journalistic process. Medical/health interests stem from her Vice-chairmanship of the All Party Group on Cancer, and musings over the safety of MMR vaccination following her son's birth.
