MP for Bromsgrove, Sajid Javid has come under fire after voting for a review of standards investigations before a government U turn.

Former MP, Owen Paterson was found to have lobbied on behalf of two companies which had paid him more than £100,000 a year – Randox, and Lynn’s Country Foods.

Mr Javid supported a vote in Parliament on November 3 to establish a new, Conservative-led, committee to reconsider both Mr Paterson’s case and whether a new standards system is needed.

However, shortly after, due to mounting pressure the government backtracked and promised a new vote on Mr Paterson’s suspension.

The former North Shropshire MP then resigned anyway.

A spokesperson for Bromsgrove Labour said: “It is no surprise that Sajid Javid voted to back a review of standards investigations in parliament. He has everything to gain to make the lobbying world of MPs seem less dishonourable.

“It is the view of Bromsgrove Constituency Labour Party that the privilege of serving your country as a member of parliament far outweighs any material reward from a second job. Part of serving your country is protecting democracy not the interests of your paymasters”.

David Nicholl of Bromsgrove Liberal Democrats said Mr Javid should hang his head in shame. He said: “This is like your mates changing the speed limit after you’ve been caught speeding.

“In any other walk of life if you’d been caught taking a £100,000 fee where he had a clear conflict of interest this would be corruption.

“For his fellow MPs to endeavour to interfere with the outcome of an independent investigation is a disgrace. Mr Javid should hang his head in shame”

Sajid Javid’s office have not yet responded to The Advertiser’s request for comment.
