AN alcoholic, who robbed a vulnerable man, has been told that if he stays off drink he will stay out of jail.

John Campbell, aged 45, appeared at Worcester Crown Court for sentencing after previously admitting the robbery on a man with learning difficulties.

Paul Mytton, prosecuting, told how Campbell, of Lingfield Road, Bromsgrove, had met his victim in a bookmakers in the town on September 8 last year. The man was with his brother and Campbell owed them money, which they asked for.

Mr Mytton said: "When asked about the money he suggested they go to a nearby alleyway to sort it out. What went on was caught on closed circuit television.

"He was pushed to the floor and Campbell grabbed his wallet and took £10 out of it and threw the wallet back."

Police were told and Campbell was taken in for questioning. Those dealing with him noticed that he looked like he had been drinking. Initially Campbell denied the offence, only admitting he had been involved in a scuffle.

Michael Aspinall, defending, said his client had fought a battle with alcohol addiction for many years and, since the offence, had undergone detoxification and was making good progress and turning his life around.

He added that the victim had not been injured in the attack and Campbell could not remember it happening as he was so drunk.

Judge Alistair McCreath gave Campbell credit for his willpower in fighting his drink battle and said: "If you can do a year without drink you are well on your way. I will defer a sentence to see if you can do this."

Campbell was given bail provided he stays out of licensed premises, and drinks no alcohol.
