A BROMSGROVE pub has been hit with several conditions to its licence after residents complain of loud music and anti-social behaviour.

Bromsgrove District Council’s licensing sub-committee has decided to modify the Golden Lion’s licence to reduce the hours of licensable activity to 11:30 pm daily except for New Year’s Eve and daily public open hours to be reduced to midnight.

The pub on Austin Road, Charford must also offer a meeting with residents and the local councillor every three months, rear doors should be closed after 9 pm and the rear external seating area should not be used after 9 pm.

And, on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 pm, regular checks of the front and rear external areas must be undertaken and documented.

Licensee of the pub, Josh Matheson said ‘the venue is going from strength to strength reinforcing its commitment to its neighbours’.

West Mercia Police supported the review of the pub’s license by submitting a document to the council which detailed nine incidents that were recorded at the premises from January 15 last year to August 19.

Three of the incidents relate to April 2 when a large fight broke out resulting in a window getting smashed,

A ‘large disorder’ outside the pub also resulted in a man receiving a facial injury on May 29.

In previous years, the police have recorded incidents of noise complaints, Covid breaches, assaults, drug dealing and possession of knives.

Councillor for Rock Hil, Harrison Rone-Clarke, who applied to the council for a premises licence stated in his representation: “There are concerns regarding anti-social behaviour as residents have been exposed to fights with one resident even reporting a pub-goer urinating on their house outside a bedroom window.

“We believe that the pub is not operating in a way that is appropriate to either the local area or the licencing objectives.

“With loud/live music occurring late into the night, a loud smoking ‘area’ and a ‘late-night culture’.

“Given that The Golden Lion is intended as a quiet local pub surrounded in very-close proximity by homes, this is not appropriate.”

However several representations were made in support of the pub which is described as ‘welcoming’ and ‘respectful.

Worcestershire county councillor for Bromsgrove South, Kyle Daisey said he has no concerns about the premises.

“The pub has supported a number of ‘community events’ over the past few years which has been an opportunity to bring the community together and provide for families that don’t have a lot of money," said Cllr Daisey.

“I believe the premises take the licencing objectives extremely seriously and do all within their power to prevent crime and disorder, encourage public safety, reduce public nuisance and protect children from harm.

“The manager at The Golden Lion has always reached out to support any ‘community initiatives’ that myself and local groups have worked on including the launch of the Charford POD.”

Josh Matheson, licensee of The Golden Lion said: “The license review was already in motion when I took the venue on.

“I am pleased both for the residents and the business in the local authority’s decision to find a happy medium whereby the pub can continue to thrive as a community hub, which is so important in these times, but also include our local neighbours and ensure their needs are met.”
