A teacher and world record holder from Bromsgrove has raised over a million pounds for life-saving cancer research charities after completing a global marathon challenge.

On Sunday (September 24), South Bromsgrove High School teacher Gill Punt ran the prestigious Berlin Marathon to reach the major milestone of raising £1.4 million for Cancer Research UK.

Over the past two decades, the Guinness World Record holder has been dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the charity after losing her father to bile duct cancer in 1999.

She said: “Sadly there’s probably not a family in the country that hasn’t been affected by cancer.

“For this reason, I’ll continue to volunteer and fundraise until we reach the ultimate finish line, which is a world without cancer.”

The latest challenge completed her World Marathon Majors journey where she has now joined an elite group of global runners that have raced in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

This is an exclusive club that has fewer members than the number of people who have reached the summit of Everest.

The multiple marathon runner also received recognition from the Queen in 2019 in the form of a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to charity.

This was followed by being awarded a Point of Light Award from former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
