BROMSGROVE ROVERS boss John Snape faces squad problems as he tries to get ready for the opening game of the season at Chesham United on Saturday.

Defender Ollie O’Connell, who has impressed in pre-season, had an accident at home this week, injuring his hand, and is doubtful for the game.

Fellow stopper James Hancox has a bout of swine flu, in common with goalkeeper Karl Lewis, who is recovering and is expected to be fit for the game.

Hancox, if he recovers, will also start in Snape’s preferred four-four-two formation.

But Luke Barlone, signed from Atherstone earlier in the summer has had a seven day approach from Halesowen and looks set to leave.

To offset the close season problems, Snape was looking at a number of trialists in a reserve game last night (Tuesday).

They included left side player Luke Finley and Laurence Martins as well as former Green Rapinder Gill. They are all currently attached to Hednesford Town.

Snape is keen to strengthen his squad, and this week said he had enough numbers to field a team, but wanted strength in depth.

He said: “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster the last few weeks with players coming and going, some of them getting injured or ill, and it’s only meant to be pre-season.

“I will have a good look at the trialists, some of whom are known to us like Rapinder, and it is up to him and the others to prove they are worth a contract.

“The serious business starts against Chesham and they will take no prisoners because they had a good season, so make no mistake about it, it is going to be a tough start to the season.”

Rovers lost their final pre-season friendly at home to Brackley Town 2-1, despite taking the lead through Kevin Banner. They are away to Bedworth United on Tuesday night (7.45pm).
