A BROMSGROVE-based travel writer will be returning to the Chernobyl radiation zone to work with disabled children.

Nigel Roberts is continuing his mission to do all he can for youngsters in Belarus at the Children’s Correction Centre.

Nigel, a trustee of The West Oxfordshire Vetka Association charity, went out earlier in the year to help raise awareness as well as cash for the centre.

He said: “The key point here is that we’re not about humanitarian aid.

“We help all we can with funding and resources, but the real decisions on how to spend monies and plan for infrastructure development must come from the community itself.

“That way, they own it and have responsibility for it.”

Nigel will be flying out on September 26 with the aim to raise as much cash as possible to help deliver services such as massage and aromatherapy as well as buy specialist equipment.

Money is also needed to rebuild part of the centre’s building and add a sensory garden.

Nigel, who has been going to Belarus for nine years, added: “The visit in a couple of weeks will be all about spending some quality time with the children.

“We’ll be seeing how the new sensory room works and also working with the staff on some more long-term planning.

“In a place like that if a problem is too big, then it is simply ignored. People pretend that these children just don’t exist, but things have to change.”
