A MAN was injured when a diesel tank exploded on a narrow boat in Tardebigge on Friday, (March 2).
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS), two ambulances and an incident support officer were called at 11.40am to reports that the narrow boat in the dry dock area of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, near to the Tardebigge tunnel, was on fire.
On arrival firefighters found there was no fire, but a man in his 20s had been injured in the explosion.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews treated the man for a possible leg fracture and he was taken to Alexandra Hospital in Redditch for further treatment and assessment.”
Station commander Ian Jallands, from HWFRS, said it seemed fumes from the boat’s diesel tank ignited as the man was welding, which then caused the explosion.
Crews worked to make the scene safe, ensuring welding equipment was switched off.
