TWO ‘good samaritans’ have helped to pull a woman and young boy out of a car, after it left the road and careened off into an underpass in Droitwich.

The incident occurred at approximately 9.30am during the morning rush hour on Tuesday, June 16 when a dark blue Peugeot 206 left Westward Road, drove down a grass bank, and became wedged in the brick wall incline down to a subway underpass, luckily missing any pedestrians who might have been using the shortcut.

Speaking just after the collision, a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: "We were called to a single car collision at 9.15am. A Peugeot 206 left the road, and became stuck in the subway off Thatchers Way.

"A female driver sustained injuries to her leg, but they are not life-threatening. Injuries to the young boy are not exactly known yet, but they are not serious.”

A witness to the crash said that two people who were passing the scene by helped to rescue the car's occupants before paramedics had even reached the scene.

Theresa Steven, of Westwood Road, said: "A car came off the road, and there was woman and a little boy in there.

"It's a very nasty accident, there was a big bang so people went to go and see what had happened.

"A man and a woman pulled the people out of the car- the little boy was pushed up against the back of the car.

"Thank goodness the good samaritans stopped and pulled them out the car, otherwise their injuries could have been worse, it could have been a disaster."

Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find the car which had left the road, travelled around 50 yards and crashed down into the underpass below.

“The driver of the car, a woman in her 30’s, was already out of the vehicle and being assisted by a passing nurse. The woman had suffered a serious ankle injury, back pain and a nose injury.

“She received emergency treatment from ambulance crews including pain relief and being immobilised using a spinal board and neck collar.

“The woman was then transferred to Worcester Royal Hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

“The passenger in the car, a boy believed to be two years old, suffered minor facial injuries and also received treatment from paramedics before being transferred to hospital. Thankfully the child was in an appropriate child safety seat and fully restrained.

“Considering the circumstances of the crash it is extremely fortunate that no one suffered more serious injuries and no one was walking in the underpass at the time it happened.”

Westlands Road had been resurfaced on Monday, June 15, and had a 20mph speed limit in place, but a number of residents had expressed concerns that drivers were struggling to stay in control of their vehicles on the new surface even at the slower speed.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council's highways, said: "Whilst our resurfacing works are being carried out we do ask drivers to take a little extra care. There may be some loose stone chippings on the road, so drivers need to slow down and stick to any speed restriction. They should not take unnecessary risks and temper driving according to the conditions to keep safe."
