BROMSGROVE residents are being given the chance to have their say on the plans to redevelop the town's former fire station into retirement apartments.

McCarthy and Stone, a developer of retirement apartments, has shown an interest in the former station in Windsor Street, which became vacant after firefighters moved to their new premises - the combined police and fire station in School Drive in 2014.

The developers are proposing to redevelop the site with Retirement Living accommodation, high-quality landscaping and associated car parking.

The public exhibition will give residents the opportunity to view the preliminary plans, which have been designed to meet the needs of elderly residents in affordable retirement housing, with car parking and professionally landscaped gardens.

The developers say the site is located for older person's accommodation, being within walking distance to Bromsgrove’s High Street.

The site has been allocated in Bromsgrove District Council’s emerging Local Plan - the draft blueprint for future development in the area - for retail development.

But concerns have been raised from local people that this would move trade away from nearby High Street.

Plans are at a preliminary stage and the exhibition marks the next stage community consultation.

The exhibition is being held on Monday, July 6 between 3pm from 7pm at St John's Church Hall, in Kidderminster Road.

Darren Humphreys, regional managing director at McCarthy and Stone said: “We believe this site is ideal for retirement living accommodation, being close to shops and services in the town centre.

"Our homeowners typically shop locally, so this development would represent a significant investment in the local economy.

"We want to hear from the local community and our future home-owners before we submit a planning application."

He added that the project team will be there to answer questions and listen to feedback on what has been done so far.
