KIND-hearted Bromsgrove residents have rallied together to donate more than 1,000 pairs of old specs to help underprivileged people in Africa.

The huge number of glasses has been collected by the town’s Specsavers on High Street, with staff encouraging people to bring in further donations of old and unwanted glasses.

The specs will support the work of Vision Aid Overseas (VAO), who provide eye tests and glasses to those living in poverty who have little or no access to eyecare.

Specsavers store director Mark Gibson said: "We’re so proud to be able to donate 1,000 pairs of glasses to VAO.

"It’s an initiative that we have been involved in over the past few years, and one that we will continue to support.

"The work that VAO does is so important for those in developing countries who are affected by poor vision and this is a small way in which we can help.

"The donated specs are recycled to generate income to support overseas programmes.

"The team were thrilled when they counted up the total amount, and we’re hoping for even more in the lead up to Christmas – think of it as your one good deed this festive season."

To donate your unwanted specs, visit Specsavers at 131 High Street or call 01527 579815.
