MORE than 2,000 people descended on Feckenham for the annual scarecrow festival, featuring nearly 60 exhibits.
The first prize for best scarecrow went to Witchcrow by Alan Smith. This was more of a tableau vivant, or living picture, than a traditional scarecrow but it delighted the crowds with its creepy smoke, bubbling cauldron and a black clad figure that remained motionless for most of the time but suddenly came to life - prompting screams of terror and delight.
Second prize was Feckenham Frozen Frolics" by Emma Brownilow and Judy Underwood. This was an icy tableau based on the hit animated film Frozen.
And third prize was Game of Crows by Judith Hooker. This was a chess game in which all the pieces are scarecrows or crows. An incredibly intricate design all handmade with perfect and tiny details.
Best scarecrow by an entrant under the age of 12 was Bee Crow by Ethan and William of Class R at Feckenham First School
A spokesman from Feckenham Entertainments Committee, which organised the event, said: "The standard was universally high and the result was close - needing two recounts to establish the winners.
"The event is just for fun and the donations taken and proceeds of the tea tent are used to cover costs. However, as this year's event was very successful, any surplus will be used to support other village activities and voluntary organisations."
