FOR a variety of genuine reasons, current police methods seem to attract criticism. The image the public get of them is at an all-time low.

I cannot remember the last time I saw a proper police officer patrolling our streets.

When you do see them, they are dressed like SAS soldiers, wearing high-visibility jackets with handcuffs, CS gas canisters and truncheons displayed on their belts.

I cannot recall an incident in the Bromsgrove town centre in daylight hours where these would have been required.

Some degree-holding senior officer will no doubt respond, trying to justify such appearances. I know they will blame health and safety requirements.

If I were foolish enough to suggest the return of the Dixon of Dock Greentype officer, I have no doubt I would be locked up and put on heavy medication.

As a Bromsgrove resident, I have become increasingly aware of Community Support Officers patrolling inside our local supermarkets. I can only assume this is to deter shoplifters and pickpockets. Surely, the police are not being paid for these measures.

I think the majority of Bromsgrove residents would support me if I said we would prefer these PCSOs to be patrolling our local streets, alleys and open spaces, so as to protect our houses, cars and to deter unlawful drinking and drug- taking.

It would also be satisfying to see more proper police officers patrolling our residential areas on foot.

We can live with the hope that pigs might fly.
