Stourbridge 2

ROVERS’ last realistic chance of success this season ended as they were sent crashing out of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

Second-half goals from Linden Dovey and Aaron Drake sealed a comfortable quarter-final victory for Stourbridge, who advance to take on Tamworth for a place in the final.

With a number of players cup tied and injured, Rovers boss Rod Brown was forced to draft in Jermaine Clarke, Chris Dickinson and Carl Slater, all of whom had stints with the club earlier in the season.

Chris Kiely, granted a special dispensation to play in the game, had a busy first half as Stourbridge pressured the Rovers goal.

He made three excellent stops to deny Nathan Bennett from close range.

Rovers' only effort in the first period came from Chris Dickinson, whose long-range shot crept past the post.

Nine minutes into the second-half, ex-Rover David Bridgwater picked a hole in his former club's defence, with a cross to the back post which Dovey calmly slid past Kiely to give Stourbridge the lead.

The hosts almost responded immediately when Jermaine Clarke held off two Glassboys defenders and fired a powerful shot over the bar.

Dovey wrapped up the tie for the Glassboys on 63 minutes with a wonder strike from 30 yards.

Picking up the ball out on the left, he cut inside and smashed his long-range effort into the roof of the net.

Dovey missed a golden chance from close range for the visitors, when he met substitute Kyle Hadley’s cross.

For the hosts, Kevin Banner had a couple of long-range efforts late on, but Lewis Solly had a quiet evening in the Stourbridge goal, and the Glassboys comfortably saw out time to book a semi-final spot.
